NEW YORK--February 24, 2004 - Forty years ago, Shirley and William Jones thought they had made the big choice when they decided to get married. It turns out that 40 years later, Shirley made an even bigger choice when she entered the SIRIUS Big Choice Sweepstakes, which promised a million dollar prize to a lucky entrant and a million to another person the winner chose. For this Knoxville, Arkansas couple, the choice was easy - the spouse would become the second million-dollar winner -- and now the rest of America is trying to "keep up with the Joneses."
SIRIUS, known for delivering the very best in commercial-free music and premium sports programming to cars and homes across the country, announced the Big Choice Sweepstakes in September 2003, and word of the opportunity spread rapidly among friends in the Jones’ close-knit Knoxville community. The Jones had recently retired -- he from the construction business and she from accounting -- and they returned to their home in Arkansas to be closer to friends and family.
The Joneses were also no strangers to SIRIUS. The move back to Arkansas meant the couple had few radio options, including just one country music station with poor reception. “There’s not a lot of choice in the boondocks,” said Shirley of her beloved town, with a laugh.
Having considered adding satellite radio to their lives for some time, Shirley was excited to log on to the SIRIUS web site to discover the numerous music, news and entertainment choices. Their unrequited love of country music is now satiated by SIRIUS’ six 100% commercial-free country music streams, including New Country, Prime Country, The Roadhouse, The Border, Bluegrass, and Folk Town. And if that isn’t enough, SIRIUS delivers a total of 61 100% commercial-free music streams and more than 40 streams of news, sports, and entertainment, including complete coverage of every NFL game, every week beginning this coming football season.
When the doorbell rang a few weeks ago, Shirley thought her husband was just trying to fix it. She went to the door to double check, and instead found a package with her husband’s name on it. When the couple opened it up and read the first line of the documents informing them of their winnings, “I almost fell over,” Shirley said. “As both parents and grandparents, it takes a lot to shock us, but SIRIUS managed to do it.”
With their winnings, Shirley and William plan to purchase a new car or two (equipped with SIRIUS, of course). The Joneses could use their prize money to scoot around the country with SIRIUS as a factory or dealer option in the 2005 New Beetle or in the 2005 all-new Jetta. Or, they can choose from six Mazda vehicles that will feature SIRIUS as a dealer-installed option including the Mazda Tribute, Mazda MPV, Miata, RX-8, MAZDA3, and MAZDA6. Other automotive brands offering SIRIUS in select new car models include BMW, MINI, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep®, Nissan, Infiniti, Audi, Ford and Lincoln-Mercury.
The Joneses also plan to assist a family member, and make a number of smart investments so that they can enjoy a long, comfortable retirement.
And with their new SIRIUS radios, the couple will be able to wake up every weekday morning to “The Wall Street Journal This Morning,” which covers the morning’s top business and money news, technology, careers and more. And they’ll hear hourly market reports and news from experts at The Wall Street Journal Report and Dow Jones Money Report, not to mention business news from CNBC, CNN and Fox News. All this so SIRIUS can help the Jones’ put their winnings in all the right places.
* Each winner will receive an annuity of $1 million to be paid as $50,000 a year for 20 years.
