CES, LAS VEGAS & NEW YORK – January 7, 2004 – SIRIUS Satellite Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI), known for delivering the very best in commercial-free music and premium sports programming to cars and homes across the country, today announced that it plans to offer real-time traffic information to subscribers beginning in approximately 12 months. This new feature is expected to be offered in a range of tiered service options, and is to be compatible with all navigational systems used by automotive OEMs and aftermarket suppliers.
SIRIUS plans to integrate traffic information with weather service content, which plays a crucial role in traffic flow and speed patterns. Content partners for traffic and weather will be announced in the coming months.
The service is expected be offered in tiers, including simple traffic, advanced traffic and, ultimately, personalized predictive traffic. Simple traffic is expected to provide regional information about driving conditions, and to be backwards compatible with all SIRIUS radios, utilizing current radio displays to provide information. Advanced traffic is expected to offer full integration with a navigational system, and to graphically show traffic flow and incident (accident or construction) data. Navigation systems will be able to graphically show alternate routes to the driver's destination. Finally, predictive traffic information is expected to combine weather, flow, speed, incident and historical data to provide information in a predictive nature, such as when a driver should leave his or her home to get to a football game in time to see the kick off.
"Traffic combined with a navigational system has always been the holy grail of driving enthusiasts. With our tiered service offering, drivers will be able to enjoy the benefits of traffic information with or without a navigational system," said Larry Pesce, Senior Vice President Product Development and Strategic Planning, SIRIUS. "We will work with all of our aftermarket and automotive OEM partners to integrate these features across a wide variety of receiver models and platforms."
